TAX QUESTION: I am completely confused on why I owe on federal taxes...HELP PLEASE!?
I have always filed my own taxes and have never had any problems, but I'm am completely confused as to why, when I complete the e-file process, it says I owe! I have really simple taxes, with two W-2's to report, no kids and no other deductions/income. When I add each of them seperately, each one has a summary that says I should receive around $440 back. But when I add them both on, I magically owe $162! I don't understand...If the summary shows each one gives me a credit around $440, shouldn't I be getting a refund around $880...and not have to owe?! Someone give me a clue please. I'm completely confused and this has never happened to me in previous years.

Why are you so against taxes, state and federal?
As long as the taxes are distributed fairly from poor to rich, I am still baffled at why so many citizens in the United States are against taxes? Don't you realize what they do for this country? Federal taxes help pay for interstate highway repairs, things like the PELL grant that help students pay for college, the wages of our soldiers who die for us every day. State taxes help keep the fees for car tags, they pay for the schools and teachers wages, the roads in the state.. The list literally does go on. So why are taxes so bad? Why do people act so happy when they get tax cuts? It does not go to just the poor, yes states have the burden of the "welfare" state now but that is such a narrow view of where taxes go, it goes to so many other places that help EVERYONE. So please tell me, as the elections are going on, why are you for less taxes?
I've heard the discussion that less taxes would give people more to spend but does it really? Bush has supposedly cut taxes the past 8 or so years but our deficit is more than it has ever been and I'm sure some of that is from wasteful spending but I can't help but see a connection. Maybe the biggest problem is that most of those cuts actually helped his cronies, the rich. My point about taxes is that I just don't understand that leg that Republicans stand on. There are a few states that do not have income tax, for example, and they are a mess! Like Texas, for example.
Education is an iffy subject, you can say that you want to chose where you want to go and how you want to be educated but the problem with that is that sure, you may have the money to fund such a venture, but MOST people in this country do not. So why should you get the benefits while everyone else gets screwed. And if you don't like the way the education system is, why don't you go to college, finish getting an education than fix it? Nothing is etched in stone :)
Okay, the special interest projects that get funneled taxes (wasted money). There are definitely some things I agree with there, but that is an administrative issue NOT a tax issue per say. Why don't people protest how their taxes are being used rather than try to vote for someone that will let them keep a fraction more of their taxes? Elect someone who can audit the governments better. Abuse is not an excuse to cut taxes.
Okay, Philip, you can be uber selfish and drive on dirt roads, have no education for your children except for what you want to pay for or do yourself, but everybody else i'm sure would like to have otherwise. if you would read my former comments you would have seen that everyone, even you, benefit from taxes.
Freedom For All - just because your school is bad doesn't mean all are and no one should be educated that can't afford it, which is what you are saying. Stop beating a dead bush about Education, if you don't like your school, campaign to the state to have them come in and change it. Or if you really hate it, think logically, explain to your parents why you dislike it and perhaps you can get transfered to another district. What if your parents had to pay for your education and couldn't afford it, so you get no education, and in today's day in age where you need an education to get any kind of job that is self-defeating. AGAIN, if you don't like the education system, strive to change it rather than griping about being stuck in it.
Why is the Department of Education, the Pell grant, and other social services bemoaned by people in this country? Don't you want to help your fellow citizens to better themselves? So often I hear about how this country is now (in general anyway) a Christian country, if you are Christian that means you follow the precepts of Jesus and God and doesn't that say to help those who need help? Even if its just a hand up? Whats wrong with giving children an education, with helping students whose parents make less so that they can improve themselves and become spenders in our economy. Welfare is abused in some states, but it also helps newly divorced mothers get back off of their feet, not all are "welfare queens" as Reagan termed it in the 80's.
So this is what I've perceived about taxes, people would rather have control of their money, even to the extent that others are hurt, because its your money. At least for those against taxes.
I was wondering if I would get the communism bid, and there it is. well here is the definition from www.m-w.com (merriam-websters dictionary online)
"1 a: a theory advocating elimination of private property
b: a system in which goods are owned in common and are available to all as needed
capitalized a: a doctrine based on revolutionary Marxian socialism and Marxism-Leninism that was the official ideology of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics b: a totalitarian system of government in which a single authoritarian party controls state-owned means of production c: a final stage of society in Marxist theory in which the state has withered away and economic goods are distributed equitably d: communist systems collectively"
So if we're talking communism, sure there is an element of SOCIALISM
(1: any of various economic and political theories advocating collective or governmental ownership and administration of the means of production and distribution of goods
2 a: a system of society or group living in which there is no private property b: a system or condition of society in which the means of production are owned and controlled by the state
3: a stage of society in Marxist theory transitional between capitalism and communism and distinguished by unequal distribution of goods and pay according to work done)
But we still have private property that is protected by the Consitution. In talking about taxes being taken fairly from poor to rich (meaning the rich pay considerably more than the poor), I am not discussing communism which would be me saying that we should hand over our houses, cars, all material belongings to the goverment for redistribution. Lets not go down a slippery slope please.
